Chess Champions

March 26, 2020 by Carolyn

There are many amazing aspects to chess. One if the most fascinating is chess history.

It’s captivating to think about what was going on in world history during different chess eras. The best games ever played can be studied and enjoyed.

It’s a free time travel trip where you have a front row seat to grandmasters throughout time.

One of the easiest ways to enjoy these games and learn a lot is to do a search online for a famous player and find links to their games you can replay on your computer screen.

Going back from 1866 to today there have been sixteen world chess champions… can you name  them and the year they became world champion?

Steintz 1866
Lasker 1894
Capablanca 1921
Alekhine 1927
Euwe 1935
Botvinnik 1947
Smyslov 1957
Tal 1960
Petrosian 1963
Spassky 1969
Fischer 1972
Karpov 1975
Kasparov 1985
Kramnik 2000
Anand 2007
Carlsen 2013

In comments via Facebook, can you tell us one world event that happened during a chess champion’s year?

Let’s take advantage of the time and opportunities to be productive and have fun learning and improving!
