When did you start playing Chess? Why?
I learned to play chess from some friends when I was nine. I kept losing so I taught my little sister and brother how to play and finally got my first two wins.
What is your most memorable game?
Many great games and memories, but a couple below; Eric had won five major Colorado tournaments that year including the Colorado Open and the Colorado Closed Invitational Championship. The second game shown was a win over a two time Denver Open Champion.
What is your favorite piece?
It depends on the position of course, but I love playing with the bishop pair…note my queen sacrifice and mate with them in my game versus Colorado Champion Eric Montany.
Why do you like teaching chess?
After a 39 year corporate career where I trained and taught adults, I find it so rewarding to coach and pass on my knowledge and love for chess to young students.
It’s very rewarding seeing students I work with winning many championships including three Colorado state champions; Cord, Tyler and Jason.
What do you enjoy besides Chess?
I enjoy cycling, hiking, swimming and fishing… most of all with my eight grandchildren!
I have two hobbies inside a hobby; I play every chess opening and I love chess history, With all my chess coaching, I still study and am an active tournament player. I have played chess for fifty years now and have competed in the US Open, National Open, US Masters, North American Open, World Open, and New York Open along with many state events. Along the way I’ve met and played many of world’s top players including World Champions Tigran Petrosian and Susan Polgar. When I was a store manager I used to challenge the community of Greeley and played fundraising simultaneous exhibitions of up forty five challengers at once. We raised over $7,000 for United Way over three years through chess!
I am blessed to be part of Zach’s Chessmates team. Zach has done an amazing job putting his organization together and many, many young people benefit!
