When did you start learning chess? Why?
I started learning chess at the age of eight, when my Grandfather bought me a mini chess set with instructions on the inside. Later that night, I played a match with my brother which I am sure ended with my pieces getting forked right and left. I only started taking chess seriously my first year of high school when I would play a chess computer on my phone whenever I had free time. Eventually I was crushing my dad with tricks I would learn from videos I saw.
What is your memorable game?
Memorable, yet possibly the most stressful game I ever played was the last round of the 2021 Online Colorado Scholastic Championship. I had made a poor decision in the opening which left my king helpless in the center of the board. After hours of exhausting defense, I salvaged a draw from a two pawns down rook endgame.
What is your favorite piece?
The king has become possibly my favorite piece. It is always on the board so you must learn to work with it. Crucial in the endgame, it is necessary to know when to protect and serve the king, and when to use the king to lead your army to victory.
Why do you like teaching chess?
When I work with a newcomer to chess, I am opened up to a whole new perspective. They ask important questions, and bring a whole new energy to chess I would not have come up with myself.
What other activities do you enjoy?
I come from a family of professional musicians, so naturally I gravitated toward music. I found my way to the flute when I was young, and still love it today. It is an uplifting experience to make someone’s day by playing music for them. Recently I have become a bit of a gardener and grow plenty of fruits and vegetables for my family to enjoy. I enjoy rock climbing whenever I can, and try to stay fit with calisthenics.
