Featured Player – Walker C

March 24, 2017 by Carolyn

Welcome to this week’s featured player:

Walker

Walker is the 5th grade. Let’s learn more about Walker.
When did you start playing Chess? Why?
I started playing “No Stress Chess” at about 8 years old. It uses the regular rules of chess, except you draw cards and can only move that piece. It teaches you how pieces move and takes most of the strategy out of the game. Then I started a homeschool chess class last spring and went to chess camp.
How old were you when you first beat your parent?
After a few classes last spring so I was 10 years old.
What is your most memorable game?
The 5th game at the Caro Kahn Tournament. It is my most memorable game because it showed me that I can improve by practicing and studying. I won against an opponent who beat me during the tournament before.
What is your favorite piece? Why?
The Queen because it is not only the most valuable piece on the board but it is used in many attacks.
Is your favorite part of the game opening, middle game, or endgame?
The opening.
Whats your favorite chess opening?
I have a few favorites: the Sicilian defense, Caro Kahn, Evans Gambit, and the Giuoco Piano.
Are you more of an aggressive or defensive chess player? Explain.
I am more of an aggressive player. I am better at attacking than defending.
What is your favorite chess memory?
Coming in 1st place at my first Chessmates tournament.
What is your goal for your chess in the next year or two years?
Continue to learn about chess and get a higher rating.
What is your favorite chess book?
Winning Chess Openings by Yasser Seirawan
How do you think chess most helps you in day to day life?
It helps me think through things in my head and come up with strategic ideas.
What do you enjoy besides chess?
Archery, 4-H, Minecraft, Harry Potter, LEGO, and Taekwondo.
