How a Chess Tournament Works

To register please visit: https://chessmatesfc.com/tournaments/
You will be able to make payment via the registration form.

On chess tournament day, there are a few things you need to do.

  1. Please show up at promptly 8 a.m. and check in.
Sheets, divided by section, will be hung up and you will need to cross off your name (or player’s name).
  2. Attend our player’s meeting at 8:30 a.m.
There you will learn how the tournament works and all tournament rules. Main rules are: Touch move, sportsmanship, raising your hand if you need any help during a round and reporting results.

There will be five rounds played. Each round takes around 1 hour.

Pairings are posted by section in the hallways and include player’s color (black or white) and table number.
Each time a pairing is listed it is announced.

Players will enter the gym, and play at his assigned table number. Guardian are not allowed in the gym and must remain outside in the hallway, or cafeteria.

Once a player is done with a round, he/she and his/her opponent will give the result of the game to our scorekeeper, and he/she will exit the gym.

Players hang out in the cafeteria and enjoy themselves until everyone is done with the round. They may play outside if supervised, but please don’t leave premises unless 100% sure to be back in time for next round.

Guardians must remain on the premises for the duration of the tournament.

Lunch will not be provided please bring a pack lunch, or plan to bring lunch back to the venue for participants. There is not enough time between rounds to eat lunch at a restaurant and come back in time for your round.

Our Tournaments ends at approximately 2:30pm. After a section has completed all 5 rounds, trophies are awarded for 1st-3rd place.

If you have any questions, Coach Zach will be there to help you.
